Senegal: Women Tattooing Gum For "Beautiful Smile"


Reports indicate that women in West African country of Senegal are briskly tattooing their gum for what they call a “beautiful smile.”

It is reported that mainly women in the capital, Dakar are really engaging in this new practice to make their gum look dark.

The gums of these women are tattooed with a mixture of burnt oil and shea butter and they [women] admit the dark colour gives them a very beautiful smile and improves the health of their gum.

Meanwhile, a cross section of the Senegalese society has since criticized this act stating that it will rather worsen their health of many in the society.
